How do you know if you have a rare state quarter? In this article I’m going to tell you everything you need to know to make sure you aren’t missing any rare state quarter worth potentially thousands of dollars.

2001-D Kentucky Quarter

First, we have a 2001-D 25-cent statehood quarter from Kentucky graded by PCGS a Mint State 68. One of the biggest things you want to be looking out for on these state quarters is the overall condition. This coin graded only two points away from the perfect grade of 70, and that’s why this coin sold for $129.

2005-P Minnesota Double Die Reverse Quarter

Here we have a P 25-cent state quarter from Minnesota graded by PCGS a Mint State 66 with a double die reverse. What a double die reverse is, is the reverse, which is the back of the coin, was doubled. During the minting process, the strike came down twice, doubling the impression on the coin. Sometimes it is hard to see this, so you’re going to need magnification, because this doubling on the front or the back can increase the value significantly. That’s why this coin sold for $264.

2007-D Montana Quarter

Here we have a 2007-D, D standing for the Denver Mint where this coin was minted, 25-cent state quarter from Montana graded by PCGS a Mint State 68. That’s only two points away from the perfect grade. Plus, I love the Montana coins. Look at the design of this coin. Very beautiful. The big thing here is that condition. It is only two points away from 70, and that’s why this coin sold for $376.

2003-P Missouri Quarter

Here we have a 2003-P 25-cent state quarter from Missouri graded by NGC a Mint State 68. If you have a Missouri coin that is in really good condition, it could be worth thousands of dollars just like this one, so keep an eye out for a coin that’s in really good condition from 2003. The P mint mark means that it is from Philadelphia. This coin sold for $1,527 for this 25-cent coin.

1999-P 25-Cent Georgia Statehood Quarter

All right, this coin sold for a lot of money. Here we have a 1999-P 25-cent Georgia statehood quarter struck on an experimental planchet. Also, this one was graded by PCGS a Mint State 65, but the experimental planchet means that it was struck on this gold-looking coin planchet, which is dramatically going to increase the value of the coin. So if you have a state quarter that has a different color like this one, it’s going to be worth a lot of money, so keep an eye out. This coin sold for $260.

1999-P Statehood Quarter

When most people see this type of coin, they’re going to think that it’s some sort of garbage or it was extremely damaged, but that’s not the case for this 1999-P statehood quarter from Connecticut. This one was graded by NGC a Mint State 62, and it was multi-struck on a type of planchet that destroyed the coin during the minting process, but it is considered an error coin. So if you have a coin that looks like this, it could be worth a lot of money, just like this one that sold for $1,152.

2002-D Ohio High Grade Quarter

Here we have a 2002-D, D standing for the Denver Mint, 25-cent statehood quarter from Ohio graded by NGC a Mint State 69. That’s just one point away from the 70 grade, and because this coin from Ohio graded so highly, this coin sold for $3,525. Could you imagine having a 25-cent coin that’s worth this much money?

2004-D Wisconsin Extra Leaf Error

Here’s one that not many people are going to know about. This is a 2004-D 25-cent coin from Wisconsin graded by PCGS a Mint State 67. What’s really special about this coin is that it has an extra low leaf on the back of the coin. I’m going to show an example here of the difference between a high leaf and a low leaf. The low leaf is what you want to be looking out for. It’s going to be worth more money if you find this different type of example here. Because of this low leaf and because it graded so highly, this coin sold for $6,000 for this quarter.

Sacagawea Mule Error Coin

Here is an oddity. This one sold for a crazy amount of money. This is a mint error where the front of the coin was a Washington quarter and the back of the coin is a Sacagawea dollar. You can tell immediately that this quarter should not be this color. This coin was graded by NGC a Mint State 67, which is so high for this coin. This is a 2000-P Sacagawea dollar muled with a statehood quarter. That means one side is a statehood quarter and the other is a Sacagawea dollar.

If you ever find something like this, make sure you find a trusted coin dealer or someone that can help you sell the coin for a good amount of money, because the last thing you want to do if you find something like this is get scammed out of your money. We do not want that to happen. This coin, because it’s a rare mule error coin, sold for a crazy amount of money. This coin is considered a holy grail. This is the coin that everyone wants in their collection, and this coin sold for $192,000.
